How do I keep insects out of my kids' sandbox?

I went out to play w/ my 1 yr old & 3 yr old in the sandbox yesterday and was completely creeped out by the number of bugs I found while digging around in the dirt. There ants and earwigs and some other sort of very tiny beetle or something. I don't the bugs to hurt one of my children & I don't want them to be carried inadvertantly back into the house.

1. Put fresh sand in, and then keep a cover on the sand box.
2. get new sand, put a bottom on your sand box. and cover it when you are not using it. get new sand every month or two.
3. Mix a box of non Iodized salt in the sand and let it set for a couple of days this should run the bugs out.
